If you are overweight you are more at risk of suffering from type 2 diabetes, but apparently there is an easy and pleasant way to minimize those risks. It consists of regularly drinking a rich and well-known infusion: yerba mate tea.
People who are obese or overweight are more likely to have type 2 diabetes or have pre – diabetes problems . But according to a study conducted by the Federal University of Santa Catarina , in Brazil, and published in the specialized journal Journal of the American College of Nutrition , you can reduce the risk, and in some cases even stop the disease, regularly drinking the infusion of yerba mate.
It has been shown that the infusion of yerba mate ( Ilex paraguariensis ) reduces the plasma glucose in animals and lipids (fats in the blood) in humans. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of the consumption of roasted yerba mate in the glycemic (blood) and lipid profiles of men and women with diabetes mellitus type 2 or with prediabetes.
The study involved 29 people with diabetes mellitus type 2, and 29 with prediabetes, which were divided into three groups:
In the first group, the participants had to drink 330 ml of toasted yerba mate infusion three times a day for 60 days. In the second group, the participants had to make some changes in their diet for 60 days. In the third group, participants drank yerba mate infusion and also made changes in their diet for 60 days.
During the study, participants’ food consumption was monitored and blood samples were analyzed at 20, 40 and 60 days after treatment.
The study showed that in the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who had consumed yerba mate infusion, the levels of glucose, hemoglobin and LDL cholesterol (bad or low density cholesterol) were significantly reduced. Patients in this group did not change their energy intake of protein, carbohydrates, cholesterol or fiber.
Patients with prediabetes who drank yerba mate infusion and also made changes in their diet significantly decreased levels of triglycerides and bad cholesterol (LDL). These patients decreased the total intake of fat (14%), cholesterol (28%) and saturated fat (23.8%) and monounsaturated (28.0%), and increased their fiber intake (35%).
The conclusion of the researchers was that the consumption of yerba mate improves the glycemic control (of blood sugar) and the lipid profile (of fats in the blood) of patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. And the consumption of infusion of yerba mate, combined with adequate nutrition, was highly effective in decreasing blood lipid parameters (which may include cholesterol , triglycerides , and LDL or bad cholesterol, according to what they measured in this study, since there are others) in prediabetic people, which can reduce their risk of developing coronary (heart) diseases .
